SUPERVISORY FIREFIGHTER
What you'd do
You will serve as a Deputy Fire Chief in the Navy Fire & Emergency Services (F&ES) NAVSTA MAYPORT.
Major duties
You will serve as a senior authority and advisor for fire protection for the installation. You will assess and formulate operating expenditures including staffing requirements. You will Interpret new fire protection requirements and recommend the adoption or implementation of applicable policies and procedures. You will prepare fire protection policies for the installation and promulgate directives governing fire protection matters.
What you need to qualify
***This position requires the incumbent to possess the following certifications: Firefighter I and II, Airport, HAZMAT Technician, HAZMAT Incident Commander, Fire Officer IV, Fire Inspector II, and Fire Instructor II. These certifications must have been awarded by DoD, IFSAC or ProBoard to meet the requirement. If you do not possess all of the above certifications and you have not attached copies of your certifications, you will be rated ineligible.*** Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing the following duties: 1) Managing and directing fire department operations involving structural, shipboard, crash/rescue, wildland, as well as operations involving toxic materials, Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD), nuclear, and conventional ordnance; 2) Utilizing the latest technical developments in fire prevention and protection to achieve and maintain operational readiness with minimal manpower to accomplish the overall fire protection mission; 3) Evaluating the technical adequacy of all fire protection and life safety features; and 4) Conducting investigations of fires to determine cause. In accordance with NFPA 1582 and Office of Personnel Management (OPM) standards. Physical Demands The incumbent will be required to work under extreme pressure and cope with stressful situations where confusion, panic, injury, or death may occur. May be required to wear personal protective equipment in excess of 50 pounds when working in operations. The work may be subjected to long hours in precarious locations or positions. Must successfully pass an annual physical and participate in the Navy firefighting physical fitness program. Work Environment The incumbent may be exposed to a wide variety of emergency situations. They may suffer from burns, dehydration, excessive heat, smoke inhalation, heavy protective clothing, falling materials, or explosions. They are subject to physical injury and sensory damage from firefighting activities, exposure to HazMat, specialty rescue operations, and high noise levels. They must deal with victims in emergency situations that may be in varying stages of fright, panic, injury, and shock. There may be hazards while operating or riding fire apparatus under adverse conditions. The incumbent can be required to work outside in all types of weather conditions, and requires the use of protective clothing. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
